The Adventure by SEAL, episode 9: Tintin in Europe

What would you say to visiting Europe from Tintin’s point of view?

Live the Adventure like Tintin during an odyssey through the four corners of Europe.

Belgium

Belgium saw the birth of Tintin and continues to have a special relationship with the character created by Hergé.

Crossing the country, on a motorbike or in a vintage car will remind you of the comic strip.

You will make a stop in the city of Tintin: Brussels. In addition to visiting it, you will be able to pass by the fictitious street of Labrador where Tintin lived, being in reality 26 rue du Terre-Neuve. You will observe the Street-art hidden in the city (don’t hesitate to take the thematic mini-map of the Brussels Tourist Office available in all the tourist information offices of the city for 1€). Continue your visit of Brussels through its Royal Park, which you can see in the comic book, then on to the Old Market, Place du Jeu-de-Balle with its flea market. It will remind you of Tintin unearthing a model of the ship in “The Secret of the Unicorn”. Finally, visit the Belgian Comic Strip Museum, and the Congo Museum in the suburbs, which inspired Hergé a lot.

Continue your Belgian adventure in Louvain-la-Neuve, near the capital, where you can visit the Hergé Museum.

You will continue to Antwerp, Ostend and their port having seen Tintin pass by.

Switzerland

Switzerland was also crossed by Tintin.

Start your journey in Geneva, during a motorbike tour of the city, unless you prefer to visit it on motorized skates, this famous invention of Sunflower in “Coke in stock”! Take the time to explore the city. You will spend the night at the Cornavin Hotel, like the hero.

Your journey continues in Hergé’s Switzerland. It takes you to Nyon, where you will enjoy the lake of Geneva during a boat trip. Trace the journey of Tintin and Captain Haddock in search of Professor Sunflower thanks to the leaflet “With Tintin, in the footsteps of Sunflower in Nyon” downloadable from the city’s website.

Head towards Lausanne, Montreux, then Evian-les-Bains, where you can take the opportunity to discover the local heritage, before returning to Geneva, where your journey will end.

Scotland

Scotland is waiting for you to discover its hidden treasures, from the perspective of Tintin.

Take a trip to the Highlands with Ellean Donan Castle, reminiscent of the ruins of Ben More’s Castle in ‘The Black Island’. Make a stopover on the Isle of Skye. Its port served as a model for Hergé to imagine his village Kiltoch. Explore the area with typical local houses and get lost as far as the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Continue crossing Scotland to the Isle of Arran and Blackwaterfoot. You will stay at the Kinloch Hotel (which looks like the Kiltoch Arms where Tintin had his room). Why not visit the country’s must-sees in another way? Discover the distillery of Arran, in the first edition, Snowy drank whisky without moderation! Still from the point of view of Hergé’s hero, go to the King’s Cave, this cave similar to the one where Tintin and Snowy were chased by the Ranko gorilla.

Moors, castles lost in the mist, thistles, kilts, and rough and romantic landscape, here are all the charms of Scotland that you can discover from the angle of the adventure with Tintin.

Norway

Tintin also travelled to Norway, notably to the port of Oslo and to several parts of the city, where the Castafiore gave several performances before the traditional New Year’s fireworks display. This would be an opportunity for you to visit the city.

To complete your trip, you can also take a guided walk to Trolltunga, which will offer you beautiful views.

Iceland

Do you know Akureyri and its port? Charming typical Icelandic houses, encounters and observations of whales and aurora borealis (in winter), or horse or sled dog rides in the Icelandic nature, will occupy your visits. Let’s not forget that Tintin passed through this port!

To complete this trip, why not take a tour of Iceland’s volcanoes? The best known is the Eyjafjallajökull, but Iceland is full of other volcanoes like the Katla!
